A 22-year veteran of the Broward County Sheriff’s office, James built a lengthy track record in law enforcement and has a track record of prioritizing investments in technology, focusing on mental health treatment, and keeping neighborhoods safe.
- Created Broward County’s innovative, real-time crime center to prevent crime, respond to emergencies, and support officers in the field
- Created Broward County’s Research, Development, and Training Center to better prepare officers to fight crime and respond to emergencies
- First Mental Health Deputy at the Broward County Sheriff’s office, leading crisis response and interventions for individuals with mental health issues
- Promoted through the ranks 6 times by both Republican and Democratic Sheriffs
- Nearly 10 years of experience fighting public corruption
After serving extensively in leadership roles in Broward County, James Reyes was recruited to be Miami-Dade’s Director of Corrections in 2023.
- Brought Miami-Dade’s correctional facilities into federal compliance for the first time in over a decade
- Promoted to Chief of Public Safety, where he oversees three critical departments, including Miami-Dade Police, Fire Rescue, and Corrections
